I was asked two weeks ago to sing a solo at church this upcoming Sunday. I spent the last week and a half trying to figure out what song to sing.
The theme of the service is “Potter’s Hands.” The idea that we are shaped and made to be the people that we are by God. He makes us into the people that He desires us to be.
Over the last several months “Blessings” by Laura Story has been a blessing (no pun intended!) in my life. The words have spoken to my heart through my struggles in a way that no other song was able to.
Although it does not specifically speak of the Potter’s hands, it does speak of how His hands are in our lives. It speaks of how He touches and shapes us, even through our troubling times.
Tonight I want to share the lyrics with you. I have no rights to these words. I am not even sure if it is legal for me to reproduce them here. But I wanted to allow you to have the chance to read through these words that Laura Story so carefully penned. Also, I will include the youtube video so that you can hear her sing her powerful words. Hopefully these words will speak to your heart as they did to mine.
“Blessings” by Laura Story
We pray for blessings, We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while you hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things
‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel you near
We doubt Your goodness, We doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your word is not enough
And all the while you hear each desperate plea
And long that we’d have faith to believe
‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win, we know
The pain reminds this heart
That this is not, this is not our home
‘Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
What if trials of this life
The rains, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise
Blessings on you and your family,
